EPJ B Topical Issue: Mathematical Modeling in Epidemiology: Limits and Pitfalls

Submissions are invited for a Topical Issue of EPJ B on Mathematical Modeling in Epidemiology: Limits and Pitfalls.

The last/on-going SARS-CoV2 pandemic has triggered an unprecedented boost of studies on mathematical modeling of epidemics. Large-scale data have become available on high spatial, temporal, and social resolution. Many groups have entered the field, devoting time and attention to the topic. Now, it is time to re-evaluate methods and approaches of modeling and to learn from the past for the future:

After the pandemic is before the pandemic.

The aim of this topical issue is to put recent studies under scrutiny and to make recent advances accessible to the wider community. The issue summarizes the latest developments and addresses the following questions:

  • What worked? What did not?
  • What are the limits and pitfalls of mathematical modeling approaches?
  • What can be inferred from available data and simulations? What cannot?

Contributions can address the full range of modeling and application efforts that advance our understanding of epidemiology. In particular, we invite submissions from areas such as

  • Modeling approaches: from differential equations to agent-based simulations
  • Limits and accuracy of modeling: hierarchy,moment closure
  • Applications:
    • Real-world examples: SARS, Ebola, influenza, Zika
    • a posteriori and real-time data analysis
    • Embedding of (human, livestock, wild animals) contact networks
  • Transferability of methods, models, and results but also other aspects addressing the above mentioned questions.

The issue is open to everyone working in the field. We invite contributors to communicate their intention to submit manuscripts for this Topical Issue to the Issue Editors as soon as possible. Please provide the tentative title of the paper and a short abstract.

Original research papers, Reviews, and Colloquium-type articles focusing on the full range of modelling, experiment, and application efforts that advance our understanding are welcome.

Submissions should be clearly identified as intended for the Topical Issue on ‘Mathematical Modeling in Epidemiology: Limits and Pitfalls’. Papers will be published continuously and will appear as soon as accepted on the journal website. The electronic version of the Topical Issue will contain all accepted papers in the order of publication. All submitted papers will be refereed according to the usual high standards of the journal.
