Multiscaling and localized instabilities in fracture, fragmentation, and growth processes

It is shown that localized instabilities can be an origin of log-normal and power-law statistical distributions in fracture, fragmentation and island growth processes. Results of laboratory experiments and numerical simulations performed by different authors are used to demonstrate the applicability of this approach.
