EPJ C Highlight - The first black hole image: A gravitomagnetic monopole as an alternative explanation

The Event Horizon Telescope made science history when it captured the first image of the supermassive black hole in the galaxy M87. New research suggests alternative explanations for the massive compact object at the centre of this galaxy questioning if this could contain gravitomagnetic monopole.

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has recently mapped the central compact object of the galaxy M87 with an unprecedented angular resolution. Though the remarkable breakthrough has been interpreted based on theory that M87 contains a rotating or “Kerr” black hole. New research published in EPJ C by Chandrachur Chakraborty and Qingjuan Yu at the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Peking University (KIAA-PKU), Masoumeh Ghasemi-Nodehi and Youjun Lu, at the National Astronomical Observatories of China, looks at possible alternative explanations for the image.

EPJ Web of Conferences welcomes Paulo Limão-Vieira in its Editorial Board

Paulo Limão-Vieira has joined the Web of Conferences editorial board with particular responsibility for EPJ Web of Conferences.

EPJ Web of Conferences is glad to announce that Paulo Limão-Vieira has joined the Web of Conferences editorial board with particular responsibility for EPJ Web of Conferences.

Paulo Limão-Vieira is a Professor of Molecular Physics at NOVA School of Science, and full researcher at Centre of Physics and Technological Research, CEFITEC, also in Lisbon. At CEFITEC he founded in 2004 the Atomic and Molecular Collisions Laboratory where his research focuses on electron transfer processes in atom-molecule collisions and electron scattering from polyatomic molecules. He has developed a unique crossed molecular beam experiment and led several research grants training post-docs and allowing different generations of students to obtain their PhD degrees. Currently he is member of several international scientific and steering committees and has served from 2019-2021 as chair of the Electron International Advisory Committee for Electron, Molecule and Swarms (EMS).

EPJ ST: Shahriar Afkhami new Editor on board

The publishers of The European Physical Journal Special Topics are pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Shahriar Afkhami as new Editor in the board.

Shahriar Afkhami, is Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at New Jersey Institute of Technology and his research interests lie at the interface of applied mathematics, chemical engineering, and mechanical engineering. He is particularly interested in computational and mathematical modeling of complex systems including viscoelastic liquids, electro/magnetohydrodynamics, interfacial flows in porous media, dynamic contact lines, and microfluidics. The main focus of his research is based on developing accurate and robust numerical methods for describing moving boundaries involving multiple phases and complex flows.

EPJ ST: Alfonso San Miguel new Editor on board

The publishers of The European Physical Journal Special Topics are pleased to announce the appointment of Alfonso San Miguel, professor at the University Lyon 1 and president of the Rhône section of the French Physical Society, who will support EPJ ST in Materials Science.

Alfonso San Miguel explores the physical properties of matter under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature including semiconductors, liquids or simple molecular systems. He presently focuses on the evolution of geometry, topology and dimensionality under extreme conditions, in particular in nanomaterials and low dimensional systems. He has a taste for instrumental development and interdisciplinary work combining theory and experience with specialists from different fields (physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering).

EPJ D Highlight - Quantum battles in attoscience: Following three debates

Quantum battles in attoscience: tunnelling

Discussions among an extensive panel of attoscience researchers have clarified points of tension within the field, and offer new suggestions of how research should move forward in the face of these divisions.

In July 2020, 300 researchers from 34 different countries attended the CECAM virtual workshop, ‘Quantum Battles in Attoscience’. EPJ D presents three community papers which emerged from the in-depth panel discussions held at this occasion.

EPJ ST Highlight - Examining the accelerating Universe

A new collection of papers focuses on the paradigm of the accelerating expansion of the Universe in turn unpacking some of cosmology’s most pressing questions.

A special edition of EPJ Special Topics, edited by Balasubramanian Ananthanarayan, Centre for High Energy Physics, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and Subhendra Mohanty, Department of Theoretical Physics, Physical Research Laboratory, Navrangpura, Ahmedabad, brings together a collection of papers focusing improving our understanding of the accelerating expansion of the Universe and the nature of the dark energy that drives it.

EPJ Plus Focus Point on Innovative quantum materials

Quantum Materials are materials where the manifestation of the quantum mechanical nature of matter constituents, which comes into evidence at the macroscopic scale, is used to obtain new functionalities. The study of quantum materials is relevant both on the fundamental and on the applied side. Indeed, this class of materials provides a common thread between physics, materials science and engineering. The focus is on emergent excitations, such as Dirac and Majorana fermions. In particular it analyzes their sensitivity to external perturbations, such as electric and magnetic fields, and boundary conditions that can be controlled by surface/edge terminations, defect states and nanostructuring.

This focus point issue of European Physical Journal Plus (EPJ Plus) provides a broad description of innovative quantum materials discussing a variety of different phenomena:

EPJ Plus Focus Point on Advances in the physics and thermohydraulics of nuclear reactors

This focus point issue of European Physical Journal Plus (EPJ Plus) on Advances in the Physics and Thermohydraulics of Nuclear Reactors originated from a research project - project ”OCAPIE” supported by a grant from Compagnia di San Paolo, Turin - focusing on the possibilities offered by High Performance Computing to give new boosts in the solution of a problem that, even if well known since more than 70 years, still presents huge difficulties both from a conceptual and an application point of view.

As a result of such cooperative effort both from industries and academics, results are presented ranging from the more theoretic speculations to the more practical sides.

EPJ H Highlight - Black hole thermodynamics: a history from Penrose to Hawking

alt
Conceiving the Penrose process

New research explores the historical context of Penrose’s theory of black hole energy extraction, and how it inspired collaborations across political boundaries: ultimately leading to Stephen Hawking’s celebrated theory of black hole radiation.

In 1969, English physicist Roger Penrose discovered a property which would later allow for a long-awaited link between thermodynamics, and the far stranger mechanics of black holes. Through new analysis published in EPJ H, Carla Rodrigues Almeida, based at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, sheds new light on Penrose’s motivations and methods, and explores their historical influence on the groundbreaking discovery of Hawking radiation.

EPJ Plus Focus Point on Modified Gravity Theories and Cosmology

This focus point issue of European Physical Journal Plus (EPJ Plus) aims to reflect the diversity of modified gravity theories and of their applications to the cosmological problem. The scope of the covered topics is enough broad, ranging from teleparallel gravity and gravitino problem in extended gravity up to traversable wormholes in f(R) gravity, from a model of lattice universe, up to addressing the Hubble tension within modified gravity. There are also papers dealing with modified gravity tests, namely, with Lense–Thirring precession, with observational constraints, including the black hole shadow, with the Solar system constraints to Brans–Dicke and Palatini f(R) theories, as well as with suggestions for high-precision gravitational redshift measurements as probes for gravity theories.

This collection also indicates that the modified gravity and cosmology are widely developing areas being in permanent contact with ongoing observational surveys and experimental programs.

All articles are available here and are freely accessible until 28th November 2021. For further information read the Editorial
