Submissions are invited for a Topical Issue of EPJ B on High Field Superconducting Magnets: Materials, Technology and Applications.
With the continuous development of superconducting materials and superconducting magnet technology, it has played an increasingly important role in power systems, medical equipment, fusion devices and other fields. The superconducting power transmission can save a lot of energy loss. Superconducting medical devices (such as MRI, proton therapy devices and so on) offer a powerful path to better disease diagnosis and improved treatment outcomes. The construction of magnetic confinement fusion devices is also based on high-field superconducting magnets. The core issue of the superconducting technology is to maintain superconducting state under different operation conditions. To address this issue, many superconducting physics problems are analyzed and studied from a systematic perspective, such as superconducting materials, critical performance, AC loss calculation, stability margin, quench propagation etc. The critical performance will affect the AC loss and stability evaluation. None of these challenges can be addressed in isolation. The research of superconducting technology is a complex system engineering.
In this Topical Issue, we aim to provide a snapshot of the ongoing methodological research on complex superconducting magnet system, along with the latest research results about the superconducting critical performance, new AC loss calculation methods, mathematical models for stability margin evaluation and other related applications of superconducting technologies.
Topics to be covered:
- Superconducting magnets, wires, and tapes
- Pinning properties
- Cuprates
- Fe-based superconductors
- MgB2
- Unconventional superconductors
- Superconducting properties and new measurements
- Hydrides
- Screening current analysis
The submissions to this Topical issue are open to all the researchers who would like to join this project. Original research papers (Regular Articles), Topical Reviews, Colloquia, Perspectives and Roadmaps are welcome (please see the definition of the article categories at https://link.springer.com/journal/10051/aims-and-scope). We invite contributors to communicate their intention to submit manuscripts for this Topical Issue to the Guest Editors as soon as possible. Please provide the tentative title of the paper and a short abstract. The full manuscripts should be submitted before the deadline directly to the EPJ B Editorial Office at https://www.editorialmanager.com/epjb/.
Submissions should be clearly identified as intended for the Topical Issue on ‘High Field Superconducting Magnets: Materials, Technology and Applications’. Accepted papers will be published continuously and will appear as soon as accepted on the journal website. The electronic version of the Topical Issue will contain all accepted papers in the order of publication. All submitted papers will be refereed according to the usual high standards of the journal. More information about EPJ B, including instructions for authors is available here.
Deadline for submission: March 31, 2025

Open Access: EPJ B is a hybrid journal offering Open Access publication. If the CORRESPONDING author is affiliated to an institute that has an Open Access agreement with Springer, the OA publication - if verified - is paid by the agreement partner. All OA agreements are listed with more details here. Eligibility will be automatically verified when the corresponding author is requested to complete the relevant affiliation information after acceptance of the paper during the production process. Corresponding authors not affiliated to institutes with Open Access Agreements are redirected to proceed with “Please select your publishing model” and have to decide between paying the current Open Access fee - for details see How to publish with us | The European Physical Journal B (springer.com) and Open Choice programme) - or choosing the subscription option without any publication charges.
